Residents’ Day and SSPP Congress 2025: Trainees at the Heart of Psychiatry

Residents’ Day co-organised by SVPA-ASMAP-ASAP

The 2nd edition of Residents’ Day, the event dedicated to psychiatry trainees within the Swiss Congress of Psychiatry, took place on 17 September at UPK Basel. More than 160 participants joined this full-day programme, designed specifically to address trainees’ needs. Beyond the chance to reconnect with familiar faces and to build new bonds across regions, the day offered a rich mix of scientific input and practical tools: from logbook and exam workshops to pragmatic guidance on insurance reports, clinical updates, ethical debates and career pathways.

From essential logbook and exam workshops (a must for anyone aiming at the FMH title) to pragmatic tips on insurance reports by SSPP President Fulvia Rota, the day was rich with practical tools. Thomas Müller guided us through the clinical diagnosis of ADHD in adults, Holger Baumann invited reflection on the ethics of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, and Pierre Marquet shared his journey as a research-clinician bridging Switzerland and Quebec.

The highlight? A lively podium discussion where three experts, Giuliano Castigliego, Indrit Bègue, and Matthias Jäger, presented the different perspectives of the bio-psycho-social model, reminding us that at the core of our work lies not only science, but also the patient’s perspective and the human encounter. The day ended with a sushi-inspired apéro — and the promise to meet again on 16 September 2026 in Lugano for the 3rd edition of Residents’ Day.

SSPP Congress 2025

Trainees also made their mark at this year’s SSPP Congress. At our SVPA-ASMAP-ASAP table, we were delighted to meet new colleagues, exchange ideas, and answer questions. Our training infographics proved so popular that our display copy even got stolen — surely the best kind of compliment!

The scientific programme pushed beyond the classical brain–mind divide and the biopsychosocial model, offering visions of where psychiatry could evolve:

    • Claudio Bassetti on brain health paradigms
    • Thomas Fuchs on ecological perspectives
    • Riadh Abed on evolutionary framework
    • New challenges at the interface of hybridisation and technology
  •

These contributions underscored the kaleidoscope of perspectives needed to face psychiatry’s future. Our paradigmas are evolving and the kaleidoscope of perspectives will be necessary to find our way to the challenges of the future. As such, trainees have to learn the basis of our disciplines while following the evolution of society and science.

We were particularly glad to welcome Nicolas Doudeau, President of the French trainees’ association, who presented an in-depth analysis of the mental health of medical students in France and the factors shaping it. His insights, together with the active presence of trainees throughout the congress, brought a gust of fresh air — a reminder that our field is in constant evolution, and that curiosity remains its driving force.

Looking Ahead

We are already looking forward to continuing these vibrant exchanges. The next milestone will be our General Assembly, taking place on 19 October 2025 in Geneva and online (more information on our website).

And of course, mark your calendars: Residents’ Day 2026 in Lugano will once again combine logbook training, a dynamic scientific programme, and an engaging social programme.
